Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

What is AMD?
Age-Related Macular Degeneration is a common eye condition that affects the central part of your vision, known as the macula. This can make it difficult to read, recognise faces, or see fine details, especially as you get older. There are two main types: Dry AMD, which develops slowly, and Wet AMD, which can progress more rapidly and is more serious.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration – Risk Factors

While AMD is more common as we age, several factors can increase your risk. These include being over 50, a family history of AMD, smoking, poor diet, and excessive sun exposure without UV protection. People with light-coloured eyes and those with high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease may also be more susceptible. Regular eye exams are especially important if any of these apply to you, as early changes can occur without symptoms.

How we monitor AMD at KPO
At KPO, we take a proactive approach to detecting and managing AMD. We perform:

  • Comprehensive fundus examinations to thoroughly inspect the back of your eye (the retina) for any early signs of macular damage.

  • High-resolution OCT scans (Optical Coherence Tomography) to take cross-sectional images of your retina. This advanced technology allows us to detect even the smallest changes in your macula, often before you notice any symptoms.

These tests are quick, painless, and highly effective in helping us monitor the conditions over time and refer for treatment if needed.
