Blue Light Filters

Blue Light Filters – Do You Need Them?

With increased screen time from phones, tablets, and computers, many people are turning to blue light filters to protect their eyes. But what do they actually do — and are they worth it?

At KPO, we help you understand what’s fact, what’s fiction, and whether blue light lenses are right for you.

What is Blue Light?

Blue light is a high-energy visible light (HEV) that’s naturally emitted by the sun — but it’s also produced in smaller amounts by digital screens and LED lighting.

Prolonged exposure to screens doesn’t cause physical eye damage, but it can contribute to digital eye strain, especially after long workdays.

What Do Blue Light Filters Do?

Blue light filter lenses are designed to reduce the amount of blue light that enters your eyes from screens. They usually have a slight yellow or clear tint and can be added to your prescription or non-prescription lenses.

At KPO, we offer blue light coating options for most lens types, including single vision, multifocal, and reading glasses.

Potential Benefits

  • Reduces digital eye strain: Less squinting, tiredness, or dryness after screen use

  • Improves visual comfort: Particularly helpful for people working long hours on digital devices

  • May improve sleep patterns: Reducing blue light exposure in the evening may help some people fall asleep more easily

Common Myths

  • “Blue light filters prevent eye disease” – There’s currently no strong evidence that blue light from screens causes permanent eye damage or retinal disease.

  • “They completely block all blue light” – Most filters reduce a portion of blue light, not all of it. And that’s okay — natural blue light exposure during the day has important health benefits.

  • “Everyone needs them” – Not necessarily. Blue light filters can be beneficial if you experience digital eye strain, but they’re not essential for everyone.

👓 Should You Get Blue Light Filters?

If you experience sore, tired, or blurry eyes after screen use, a blue light coating could help improve your comfort — especially if you're on screens for more than 4–6 hours a day.

Our team at KPO can discuss whether blue light filters are a good match for your lifestyle and visual needs.
