Photochromatic Transition Lenses

Photochromic (Transition) Lenses

Comfort, clarity, and sun protection — all in one pair of glasses.

What Are Photochromic Lenses?

Photochromic lenses — also known by brand names like Transitions® — are lenses that automatically darken in sunlight and return to clear indoors. They adapt to changing light conditions to give you comfortable vision without needing to switch between regular glasses and sunglasses.

They’re a convenient, stylish, and protective solution for everyday wear.

How Do They Work?

Photochromic lenses are coated with special molecules that react to UV light.

  • Indoors or at night → lenses stay clear

  • Outdoors in UV light → lenses darken to a sunglass tint

  • Return to clear within minutes after stepping out of the sun

Some modern versions also react to visible light, meaning they can darken slightly even when you're behind the windscreen of a car.

Benefits of Photochromic Lenses

  • UV protection: 100% protection from UVA & UVB rays

  • Less squinting and glare: Especially helpful in bright or changing light

  • Convenience: One pair of glasses for both indoors and outdoors

  • Available in multiple colours: Including grey, brown, and green tints

  • Can be added to most prescriptions: Including single vision and multifocal lenses

Is It Right for You?

Photochromic lenses are ideal if you:

  • Spend time moving between indoors and outdoors

  • Want sun protection without carrying two pairs of glasses

  • Are sensitive to light

  • Don’t wear contact lenses and want built-in UV protection

  • Want a lens option that adjusts with your environment

They may not be necessary if you mostly wear contact lenses or already have a pair of prescription sunglasses.

🔍 What to Know Before Choosing

  • They don’t darken instantly — transition time typically takes 30–90 seconds

  • Standard photochromic lenses won’t fully activate behind a car windscreen, unless you choose a lens designed for driving (e.g. Transitions XTRActive®)

  • If you're sensitive to how lenses look, note that they may retain a slight tint indoors in bright environments
