Cataracts

Cataracts

What is a Cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which sits behind the coloured part of the eye (the iris). As cataracts develop, they cause blurry or hazy vision, increased glare sensitivity, faded colours, and difficulty seeing at night. Cataracts typically develop slowly over time and are a common part of ageing.

Cataracts – Risk Factors

Cataracts can affect anyone, but they’re most commonly related to ageing, usually becoming noticeable after age 60. Other risk factors include diabetes, long-term UV exposure, smoking, excessive alcohol use, eye trauma, and certain medications such as steroids. Genetics may also play a role. Wearing UV-protective sunglasses and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help reduce your risk.

How we monitor Cataracts at KPO
At KPO, we carefully track cataract development during your routine eye examinations. Our process includes:

  • Detailed Slit-Lamp Examinations to view the lens and assess how cloudy it is.

  • Visual Acuity Testing to check how your vision is being affected over time.

  • Referral Coordination when surgery becomes necessary, we’ll guide you through the next steps with trusted local ophthalmologists.

We help you understand when a cataract is ready for surgery and ensure you get the best outcome for your lifestyle and visual needs.
